How to store glutaraldehyde correctly, and what should be done in case of leakage?
Proper storage and leakage handling are critical to ensuring the safety of Glutaraldehyde:
- Storage precautions:
- Store in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated warehouse, avoiding direct sunlight (ultraviolet rays accelerate its decomposition) and high temperatures (storage temperature ≤30℃; freezing at ≤0℃ may cause the solution to crystallize).
- Use original sealed HDPE plastic drums (not metal containers, as glutaraldehyde may react with metals to generate precipitates) and label them clearly with "corrosive substance" and "toxic" warnings.
- Store separately from oxidants (e.g., hydrogen peroxide) and acids (e.g., hydrochloric acid) to avoid chemical reactions such as decomposition or gas generation.
- Leakage handling:
- Isolate the leakage area, prohibit irrelevant personnel from entering, and wear full protective equipment (including a chemical protective suit, gas mask, and boots) before handling.
- Absorb the leaked liquid with inert absorbents (e.g., vermiculite, activated carbon)—do not use sawdust or other organic absorbents (which may react with glutaraldehyde).
- Collect the absorbent into a sealed plastic bucket for professional treatment (do not dump it into sewers or soil); rinse the contaminated area with plenty of water and test the water quality before discharging.
